Dubai: According to the authorities of the United Arab Emirates, travellers who take unauthorised pictures or record social media reels at airports may be subject to serious penalties, including fines, equipment seizure, and in extreme cases, being placed on a no-fly list.

Concerns regarding travellers shooting inside restricted airport areas, such as security checks, boarding gates, aircraft parking areas, and baggage handling sections, often for viral social media content are becoming more frequent.

Officials say that such behaviour may violate airport protocol, UAE cybercrime statutes, and aviation security laws, especially when footage unintentionally captures important operational or infrastructure details.

Under current UAE regulations, airport security officers have the right to immediately halt filming, force material deletion, and take devices if required. Repeated or serious violations can be reported to aviation authorities, and can impose travel bans.

The warning also reflects a broader regional tightening of restrictions at Gulf airports, where officials have become more cautious about online content in recent years due to increased security concerns. Officials warn that even seemingly harmless recordings might provide information about surveillance systems, security layouts, and emergency processes.

However, photography is permitted in general public sections of airports, such as lounges and retail spaces, as long as it does not include other passengers without their knowledge or in restricted zones. Commercial filming, including influencer shoots and advertising, requires prior official approval.

Authorities have urged travellers to ‘think before recording,’ emphasising that social media trends shouldn't endanger privacy or aviation safety regulations.
