New Delhi: President of Myanmar, Min Aung Hlaing arrived in India on Saturday for a five-day official visit aimed at strengthening political, economic, and security ties between the two neighbours. The visit is his first international travel since taking office in April, following Myanmar's controversial political shift.

Min Aung Hlaing began his visit in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, where he offered prayers at the Mahabodhi Temple, one of the most sacred shrines of Buddhism. The visit was described by India's Ministry of External Affairs as a reflection of  ‘strong spiritual, historical, and people-to-people ties’ between the two countries.

The Myanmar leader is expected to meet with President Droupadi Murmu and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the visit. Border security, trade, connectivity projects, energy cooperation, investment opportunities, and regional stability are expected topics of discussion. Meetings intended to increase economic engagement are also expected to include business leaders from both countries.

The visit is strategically significant for both sides, according to analysts. In addition to getting access to vital resources and stronger cooperation along its delicate northeastern border, India is looking to broaden its influence in Myanmar in light of China's expanding presence there. After years of diplomatic isolation following the military takeover in 2021, Myanmar considers the visit as an attempt to increase regional engagement and reinforce global ties.
