Gold Hunt Turns Into Survival Fight As Seven Villagers Remain Trapped Inside Laos Cave

Vientiane: Rescue teams in Laos are battling dangerous underground conditions to reach seven villagers trapped inside a flooded cave after a gold-searching trip went wrong in the country’s mountainous Xaisomboun province.

The group entered the cave last Wednesday in search of gold deposits, but heavy rainfall triggered flash floods that blocked the exit and filled large sections of the tunnel network with water. The villagers have now been trapped underground for nearly a week.

Thai rescue divers and a Finnish cave expert who previously took part in the high-profile 2018 Thailand cave rescue operation joined efforts on Monday as authorities intensified attempts to reach the group.

Rescue officials believe the villagers are stranded on a raised ledge inside the cave where airflow is still available. However, reaching them has proven extremely difficult, with divers forced to move through a 340-meter flooded tunnel containing narrow sections measuring only about 60 centimeters wide.

Teams equipped with waterproof helmets, oxygen gear and gas monitoring devices are carefully navigating the dark cave system while monitoring oxygen levels and the presence of toxic gases. Video released by rescuers showed water nearly filling some underground passages as crews crawled through tight spaces.

Authorities are also pumping water out of the cave to improve access and reduce risks for rescue workers.

The cave is located near Long Tieng, an area known for mineral resources where villagers often search for gold despite repeated warnings from authorities about the dangers, especially during bad weather.

Officials said the rescue mission began after one member of the group managed to escape before floodwaters sealed the cave entrance and alerted authorities.
