Stockholm: A premier self-driving bus project in Gothenburg, Sweden, was abruptly halted on Monday after the vehicle collided with a city tram during its first morning of public passenger service. The transit incident occurred less than two hours into the shuttle's official debut route.
According to regional transport authority Västtrafik, the autonomous bus engaged an abrupt, unexpected braking sequence while operating in the central city. The sudden stop left an oncoming tram unable to halt in time, resulting in a low-speed rear-end collision.
Emergency services confirmed that no injuries were reported among the passengers or the safety driver on board. The pilot project has been temporarily suspended while technical teams analyze sensor and log data to determine why the vehicle's artificial intelligence system misjudged the traffic environment.
