Emergency Declared in California Amid Toxic Leak Threat

California: Governor of California Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency in Orange County, where firefighters and hazardous materials teams are working around the clock to avoid a potential catastrophic chemical disaster at an aerospace manufacturing facility in Garden Grove. The emergency was triggered by an overheating storage tank carrying about 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate (MMA), a highly flammable and poisonous chemical used in the manufacture of plastics and aerospace components.
Authorities cautioned that if pressure builds up, the tank may rupture and release hundreds of gallons of toxic material, or it could possibly explode. Firemen have been continuously cooling the tank with water, using specialised response teams, and using drones to check temperatures while they prepare containment barriers to avoid chemical overflow into nearby waterways.
The crisis has led to the evacuation of around 50,000 residents from various regions of Orange County, with shelters open for displaced families. Schools and businesses in the affected regions have also faced difficulties as officials maintain a large safety perimeter around the site.
Emergency workers detected a probable crack in the damaged tank, which could assist relieve internal pressure, reducing the immediate risk of a huge explosion. However, authorities warned that the situation remained unpredictable and that the tank could yet fail, necessitating additional evacuation orders and close monitoring. Air-quality monitors have found no significant chemical pollution outside the restricted zone.
