MANILA: A catastrophic structural disaster at an unfinished hotel project in the Philippines has left at least four people dead and 17 others missing. The unfinished nine-story building in Angeles City suddenly buckled and collapsed onto a neighboring inn, trapping a large number of overnight workers beneath an immense mountain of shattered concrete and twisted iron scaffolding.
The official death toll climbed to four on Monday morning as emergency crews recovered additional bodies from the wreckage. Rescuers faced harrowing complications trying to save two workers pinned inside the debris.
One victim’s body gave out immediately upon extrication, while the other suffered a fatal cardiac arrest before teams could clear the heavy slabs crushing him.
An international search operation remains heavily underway to locate the remaining 17 missing individuals, most of whom were construction masons sleeping on-site.
Authorities have launched a sweeping investigation into potential safety violations, noting that the laborers lacked basic safety equipment and were forced to work under severely substandard job-site conditions.
