United Nations Peacekeeping Chief Calls for Stronger Support for Peacekeepers Worldwide
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called for stronger political and financial backing for UN peacekeeping missions, describing them as a vital investment in global stability and security.
In a message marking the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers on May 29, Guterres said more than 50,000 UN peacekeepers are currently deployed around the world to protect civilians and support peace efforts in some of the globe’s most dangerous conflict zones.
He noted that peacekeepers work far from home to de-escalate tensions between hostile groups, oversee humanitarian aid delivery, support elections and create opportunities for long-term political solutions.
The UN chief paid tribute to peacekeepers who have lost their lives in service, revealing that nearly 4,500 peacekeepers have died since 1948, including 59 personnel last year alone.
Guterres stressed that attacks on peacekeepers represent grave violations of international humanitarian law and urged member states to fulfil their obligations in ensuring the safety and security of UN personnel at all times.
Highlighting this year’s theme, “Invest in Peace,” he said peacekeeping remains a proven and cost-effective tool for restoring stability and hope in regions affected by conflict, but warned that missions require consistent political commitment and reliable financial support to remain effective.
He added that investing in peacekeeping is ultimately an investment in a safer and more secure future for all, while urging the international community to continue supporting those who work to make peace possible.
