Germany's Merz hails EU deal on US pact

BERLIN: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has strongly praised the European Union's newly reached agreement on a comprehensive security and economic partnership pact with the United States. 

Speaking during a formal legislative session, Merz described the transatlantic accord as a vital milestone that ensures mutual stability and economic resilience amid escalating global geopolitical tensions.

The agreement aims to significantly lower regulatory trade barriers and deepen strategic defense coordination between the Western allies. European leadership reached a consensus on the framework following months of intensive negotiations regarding shared security concerns, defense spending targets, and international supply chain protections.

Merz emphasized that the pact effectively strengthens the foundational ties between Washington and European capitals, safeguarding democratic infrastructure against external threats. 

While some minor regulatory details still require final legislative ratification across individual European member states, the German leader concluded that the successful political deal marks a major strategic victory for Western economic and political cohesion.
