TOKYO: The Japanese government has urged China to guarantee the safety of its nationals following a knife attack that injured a Japanese man in Shanghai. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi announced that Tokyo requested a thorough investigation through diplomatic channels, demanding measures to prevent a recurrence of such violence.
The incident occurred early Tuesday in Shanghai's Minhang District, where a 46-year-old local resident stabbed a Japanese citizen in his 40s. The victim was transported to a hospital with a shoulder wound, though local authorities confirmed his injuries are not life-threatening.
Police apprehended the suspect at the scene and launched an investigation into the motive behind the assault. While Chinese officials classified the violent act as an isolated event, Japanese authorities immediately issued an advisory instructing expatriates and travelers in China to exercise heightened caution and remain highly vigilant in public spaces.
