Washington DC: US authorities have charged an Iraqi national accused of helping Iran-backed militias plan and coordinate attacks targeting American and Israeli interests in the United States and Europe, according to court filings unsealed on Friday.
The suspect, identified as Mohammad Baqer Saad Dawood Al-Saadi, is alleged to be a senior member of Kata'ib Hezbollah, an Iran-aligned militia designated by Washington as a terrorist organisation. Prosecutors say he supported or directed nearly 20 planned or executed attacks, including alleged plots targeting Jewish institutions and U.S. interests.
According to the U.S. Justice Department, the charges include providing material support to a foreign terrorist organisation and conspiracy related to attacks on civilians and public sites. Investigators allege some plots involved attempted bombings, arson attacks and assaults in cities across Europe and the United States.
U.S. officials said Al-Saadi was detained in Turkey before being transferred to American custody. He has appeared before a federal court in New York and remains in detention pending trial. His lawyer has disputed the allegations and urged against drawing conclusions before the case proceeds in court.
