Cannes: Oscar-winning South Korean director Bong Joon Ho announced on Friday that the aim of his next animated picture is to ‘surpass’ renowned Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki. He described the project as one of the most biggest creative challenges of his career.
Speaking at events around the Cannes film festival, Bong, the director of the Oscar-winning animated movie ‘Parasite’ said the film has been in development for a few years and combines themes of fantasy, emotion, and aquatic adventure.
After a career mostly dedicated to live action films like Snow piercer, Okja, and Memories of Murder, the movie, which is tentatively named ‘Ally’, is expected to be Bong's first full-length animated film.
Miyazaki, the co-founder of Studio Ghibli and the author of beloved films like ‘Spirited Away’ and ‘My Neighbour Totoro,’ has often been mentioned by Bong as one of his greatest sources of inspiration for storytelling and filmmaking.
