Geneva: The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed that eight individuals have laboratory-tested positive for the Andes Hantavirus following an outbreak aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship.
Out of 11 total reported cases, eight are confirmed, two are classified as probable, and one remains inconclusive. This cluster has resulted in three deaths since the vessel departed Argentina on April 1. Two of these victims were confirmed infections, while the third is listed as a probable case.
The Andes strain (ANDV) is particularly significant as the only hantavirus transmitted between humans. While hantaviruses usually spread via rodent saliva or waste, no specific treatments or vaccines exist for this rare disease.
One American passenger repatriated to the U.S. is currently asymptomatic but remains an inconclusive case after receiving both a positive and negative test result. Despite the fatalities, the global risk is assessed as low.
