China’s Humanoid Robot Goes From Record Speed to Real-world Tasks

Beijing: China's TianGong Ultra humanoid robot switched its attention from setting speed records to demonstrating that it can do valuable tasks in the real world.

TianGong Ultra ran 100 meters in 8.64 seconds in the World Humanoid Robot Games, beating Usain Bolt's world record by nearly a second. The achievement showed China's rapid advancements in humanoid robotics.

However, the developers at Beijing-based X-Humanoid claim that speed is merely the beginning. Their current goal is to build robots dependable, adaptive, and helpful in everyday settings.

The company has already tested its robots in industrial environments, such as placing 8-12 kg boxes onto shelves at an engine manufacturing. A smaller TianGong replica has also risen from the first to the seventeenth floors of the company's headquarters.

Humanoids are eventually expected to provide commercial services, light industrial tasks, outside inspections, and emergency rescue, according to developers. But there are still issues, such as building AI that can perform complicated tasks on its own and safely braking at high speeds.
