Bahrain Chairs GCC Side in Meeting with EU Political and Security Committee

Dr. Mohammed Ali Bahzad, Ambassador of Bahrain to Belgium and Head of the Kingdom's Mission to the European Union, chaired the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) delegation at a meeting with ambassadors of the European Union's Political and Security Committee (PSC), representing all 27 EU member states.
The meeting formed part of ongoing consultations and coordination between the GCC and the EU ahead of the second GCC-EU Summit, scheduled to be held in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in October.
Discussions focused on the repercussions of recent Iranian attacks against GCC countries and their implications for regional security and stability. Participants stressed the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states and rejecting attacks targeting civilian infrastructure, vital facilities, and other essential installations.
The meeting underscored the need for continued efforts to de-escalate tensions and strengthen regional security, while supporting diplomatic and international efforts to address ongoing challenges.
Particular attention was given to maritime security and freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab Al Mandab Strait. Participants highlighted the strategic importance of maintaining safe and uninterrupted maritime routes and called for closer cooperation with international partners to protect the free flow of shipping and trade in accordance with international law.
The security of these key waterways has direct implications for energy supplies, international trade, global economic stability and international supply chains.
The participants further emphasised the importance of continued political and diplomatic coordination between the GCC and the EU in response to regional developments.
The meeting also discussed advancing the GCC-EU strategic partnership, particularly in areas of mutual interest including maritime security, energy, economic cooperation, connectivity and mobility.
Participants stressed that stronger cooperation in these areas would serve the interests of both sides, contribute to regional and international stability, and reinforce the foundations of the strategic partnership.
The discussions are also expected to contribute to preparations for the upcoming GCC-EU Summit and help shape its outcomes, particularly regarding connectivity, security cooperation and other shared priorities.
