UK and France Hold Defence Talks After Iran Threatens Action in Hormuz

London, Paris: The United Kingdom and France are planning a meeting between their defence ministers to discuss security in the Strait of Hormuz after Iran warned against foreign military presence in the area.
The Strait of Hormuz is an important sea route through which a large amount of the world’s oil is transported. Because of recent tensions and attacks on ships in the region, many countries are worried about the safety of commercial vessels.
Britain and France are considering a joint mission to protect ships travelling through the strait. Officials said the mission would focus only on ensuring safe passage and would not be part of any American military operation.
Iran, however, has strongly opposed the idea. Iranian authorities warned that if British or French forces entered the region, Tehran would respond immediately. Iran also said that security in the Strait of Hormuz should be handled by countries in the region itself.
