The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the European Union (EU) held their first ambassador-level dialogue in Geneva on Wednesday, marking a new step in institutional engagement between the two blocs, according to officials.
The meeting was co-chaired by Bahrain’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organisations in Geneva, Ambassador Abdullah Abdul Latif Abdullah, and Cyprus’ Permanent Representative, Ambassador Olympia Neocleous. It was attended by the Permanent Observer of the GCC Mission to the UN in Geneva and the EU Permanent Observer, as well as ambassadors from GCC and EU member states accredited to international organisations in the city.
Discussions focused on the depth of relations between the two sides and ways to expand coordination and cooperation on issues of mutual concern.
Participants also exchanged views on a range of regional and international developments, including the implications of Iranian attacks in the region, humanitarian efforts, reform of the United Nations system, and global health governance.
The EU reaffirmed its support for relevant international resolutions, including UN Security Council Resolution 2817, Human Rights Council Resolution 61/1, and a resolution of the International Telecommunication Union. The meeting also explored mechanisms to enhance future cooperation and coordination across multilateral platforms.
Both sides underlined the importance of maintaining such dialogue regularly, stressing that sustained engagement would strengthen partnership and support efforts to promote regional and international security and stability.
