Trump Says US-Iran Ceasefire Still Holds After Strait Clash

Washington: US President Donald Trump said a ceasefire between the United States and Iran remains in place despite a fresh exchange of fire near the Strait of Hormuz late Thursday night. Iran accused the US of carrying out air attacks on coastal areas and targeting vessels near the strait. Tehran said its forces responded immediately by attacking American military ships in the region. The US military, however, said Iranian missiles, drones, and small boats had targeted US Navy destroyers first.

Washington stated that its forces launched ‘self-defence strikes’ against Iranian military facilities linked to the attacks. Trump later claimed the US had inflicted ‘great damage’ on Iranian attackers and warned Tehran against delaying a peace agreement. He also repeated that the US would respond more strongly if Iran escalated the conflict again.

The clashes came just a day after Iran said it was reviewing a US proposal aimed at ending the war and restarting nuclear negotiations. Reports suggest indirect diplomatic efforts are continuing through regional mediators. The latest confrontation has increased fears that the fragile ceasefire may not hold for long. Rising tensions around the Gulf region, especially near the Strait of Hormuz, continue to threaten regional stability and global oil trade.
