Santa Cruz : Víctor Hugo Claure, a judge of Bolivia’s Agro-Environmental Court, was shot dead in Santa Cruz in what authorities suspect was a targeted killing linked to organised crime.
The 49-year-old was attacked at night while driving, when gunmen on a motorcycle intercepted his vehicle and opened fire at close range, killing him on the spot.
Officials believe the attack may be connected to Claure’s judicial work, amid growing concerns over the influence of drug trafficking networks in the region. Santa Cruz, Bolivia’s economic hub, has seen a surge in violence tied to organised crime in recent months.
Judicial authorities and political leaders strongly condemned the killing, warning that such attacks threaten the rule of law and judicial independence. Calls have been made for urgent measures to improve security for judges and public officials.
Police have launched an investigation to identify the attackers and determine the motive, while security forces are under pressure to address the rising wave of violence linked to drug-related activities.
The incident adds to a pattern of escalating crime in Bolivia, highlighting concerns over public safety and the expanding reach of criminal networks.
