Istanbul : Turkish authorities have detained dozens of people in Istanbul ahead of International Workers’ Day on May 1, as part of heightened security measures.
Those detained reportedly include journalists, trade union members and opposition figures. Prosecutors issued warrants for dozens more, claiming some suspects could be involved in potential unrest or attacks.
The detentions come as authorities tighten control in key parts of the city, especially around Taksim Square, a symbolic location for May Day protests that has often been restricted by police.
Similar crackdowns have taken place in recent years, with demonstrations frequently limited or blocked due to security concerns. Critics argue that such measures restrict the right to protest, while officials say they are necessary to maintain order.
The latest detentions highlight ongoing tensions between authorities and groups seeking to mark Labour Day with public gatherings.
