Japan Warns of Possible Major Earthquake After Strong Tremor
Authorities in Japan have issued a warning about the potential for a powerful earthquake following a strong tremor that struck the country’s northern region.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said the likelihood of another major quake — possibly magnitude 8.0 or higher — is currently elevated compared to normal conditions.
The alert comes after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake hit offshore near Iwate Prefecture, sending strong tremors across wide areas, including buildings in Tokyo, located hundreds of kilometres from the epicentre. A tsunami warning was also issued shortly after the quake.
Officials reported no immediate major damage or serious injuries, but urged residents to remain cautious and prepared for possible aftershocks.
In response, the UAE Embassy in Tokyo advised Emirati citizens in Japan to stay vigilant, follow safety guidelines, and monitor official updates due to the potential risk of further seismic activity.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as precautionary measures remain in place.
