Easter truce between Ukraine and Russia ends

MOSCOW: A temporary truce between Russia and Ukraine to mark Orthodox Easter formally expired on Monday, with both sides accusing the other of failing to fully honour the agreement. The 32-hour ceasefire, which began on Saturday afternoon, was intended to provide a brief humanitarian lull in the conflict, now entering its fifth year.

Despite the expiration, the Ukrainian military reported a notable absence of long-range missile strikes and heavy aerial bombings during the period. However, as of late Sunday, Kyiv recorded over 7,600 violations, primarily involving FPV drones and local combat operations. Conversely, Russia’s Defence Ministry claimed nearly 2,000 breaches by Ukrainian forces, including drone strikes in the Belgorod and Kursk border regions.

While the truce allowed some frontline soldiers to attend Easter services, the Kremlin has rejected calls for a longer extension. Officials in Moscow stated that the ‘special military operation’ would resume in full, as diplomatic conditions for a permanent settlement remain deadlocked.
