BANGKOK: A major Thai oil corporation, Bangchak, has launched a creative campaign to help citizens combat rising living costs. The initiative, titled ‘Fry to Fly – 2 litres for 1 litre,’ invites the public to exchange used cooking oil for usable transport fuel.

Under the scheme, participants can bring two litres of used cooking oil to participating service stations in exchange for one litre of regular-grade diesel or gasoline. This pilot project, running from April 6 to April 30 this year, is currently available at 15 stations across Bangkok and nearby provinces. Each participant is permitted to exchange up to 20 litres of used oil, providing a direct benefit to households feeling the pinch of high energy prices.

Beyond immediate financial relief, the project serves a dual purpose for the corporation. The collected oil is integrated into Bangchak’s existing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) program, which converts waste into high-quality fuel for the aviation industry.

By transforming household waste into a valuable energy resource, the corporation is tackling both environmental sustainability and the economic challenges driven by current global tensions. This move shifts the focus from traditional fuel consumption to a circular economy model, where everyday waste becomes a tool for regional energy resilience.
