Bogotá: A violent attack in a rural region of southwest Colombia has left at least six people dead and several others seriously injured. On Thursday, armed individuals using both short and long-range weapons opened fire at a property near the city of Popayan, located in the department of Cauca. Local authorities reported that one victim was discovered outside the property, while five others were found inside.
The region where the attack occurred is known for conflict and coca cultivation, with various dissident groups from the former FARC guerrilla army frequently fighting for control over drug trafficking routes. Popayan Mayor Juan Carlos Munoz confirmed the injuries via social media, though the exact number of wounded remains unclear as police and army units work to secure the area.
This incident marks the 36th mass killing recorded in Colombia this year, the highest frequency since the 2016 peace deal. Despite President Gustavo Petro's 2022 goal of reaching peace agreements with various armed factions, the country continues to face its worst wave of violence in a decade.
