Washington D.C.: Donald Trump on Friday referred to the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz as the ‘Strait of Trump’ during a speech, before correcting himself and insisting the remark was intentional. Speaking at the Future Investment Initiative Priority Summit, Trump said, “They have to open up the Strait of Trump. I mean, Hormuz. Excuse me, I’m so sorry. Such a terrible mistake. The fake news will say ‘he accidentally said it’. Now there are no accidents with me.”

During his address, Trump also claimed that Iran is under pressure and willing to negotiate, asserting that Tehran had sent multiple oil shipments as part of ongoing discussions. “They’re begging to make a deal,” he said, adding that negotiations are currently underway. He suggested that reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil transit route, would be central to any potential agreement.

Trump further alleged that Iran had sent several oil shipments during talks, saying, “They said they would send eight ships of oil, then added two more. We had 10 ships. Then people realised we were negotiating.”

The US president has demanded that Iran fully reopen the waterway within days, warning that failure to do so could result in severe consequences, including potential strikes on Iranian power infrastructure.

However, on Thursday, he extended the deadline by 10 days, citing ongoing diplomatic efforts, with the new deadline set for April 6.
