Trump Signature to Appear on US Banknotes in Historic First

Washington: The United States Department of the Treasury has announced that President Donald Trump will become the first sitting US president to have his signature appear on American banknotes.
Under the plan, Trump’s signature will be printed alongside that of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, in what officials describe as part of commemorations marking the 250th anniversary of US independence.
The first $100 bills carrying both signatures are expected to be printed in June, with other denominations to follow. The move breaks with a long-standing tradition dating back to 1861, under which US currency features the signatures of treasury officials, not the president.
Currently circulating notes carry the signatures of former Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and US Treasurer Lynn Malerba.
Bessent said the decision is intended to symbolise the nation’s history and achievements, calling it a “powerful way” to mark the milestone year. US Treasurer Brandon Beach added that the country’s currency would continue to represent strength and prosperity.
The announcement is part of a broader push by the administration to associate Trump’s name with national initiatives and commemorations. Earlier this month, a federal arts body approved a commemorative gold coin bearing the president’s image for the same anniversary.
The move has drawn political reaction, with Gavin Newsom criticising the decision and linking it to concerns over rising living costs.
This year marks 250 years since the United States Declaration of Independence, when 13 American colonies declared independence from Britain.
