Jeddah: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s surprise arrival in Jeddah on Thursday marks a strategic pivot from seeking aid to providing security solutions. Meeting with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the two leaders discussed ‘regional and international developments,’ specifically focusing on the ‘military escalation in the Middle East’ and the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Zelensky is pitching Kyiv's battlefield-tested anti-drone technology to a region increasingly plagued by Iranian-designed Shahed drones, seeking to build a reciprocal defence coalition against common aerial threats.
The centrepiece of this diplomatic push is the ‘Sting’ interceptor, a Ukrainian-developed weapon costing just $2,100, designed to fend off drone swarms without exhausting expensive missile stocks. Zelensky noted on X that traditional systems like Patriot or THAAD are ‘not enough for fully effective air defence’ against modern threats.
He expressed a desire for ‘important meetings’ to secure ‘certain equipment’ and air-defence missiles that Ukraine currently lacks, stating: ‘We appreciate the support and support those who are willing to work with us for security.’
To facilitate this, Ukraine has already deployed over 200 military specialists to the Middle East. These teams are sharing ‘invaluable experience’ gained from years of defending against Russian attacks. A frontline lieutenant confirmed that exports would not compromise home defences, noting, 'We can, even on our production lines, we can build at least two times more than we need at the moment.’
By offering to ‘teach others in a month how to do it,’ Kyiv aims to leverage its military innovation to secure the vital diplomatic and hardware support it requires.
