US Says Funds Sufficient for Iran War, Seeks Backup Budget

Washington D.C.: The United States has enough funds to sustain its ongoing war with Iran, but is seeking additional financial support from Congress to ensure long-term military readiness.

Speaking to media, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the government is financially equipped to continue operations, describing the proposed funding as “supplemental” rather than essential.

He emphasised that the request is aimed at maintaining military supply levels in the future, while ruling out any possibility of tax increases to finance the war.

The Pentagon has reportedly requested up to 200 billion dollars in additional funding, a move that is already facing resistance in Congress, including from members of both major parties.

US President Donald Trump has yet to formally submit the funding request, and officials say the final figure could still change.

Defending the proposal, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said the additional funds are necessary to cover current operations and prepare for potential future military needs.

Early estimates suggest the conflict could become the most expensive US war since Iraq and Afghanistan, with the first six days alone costing over 11 billion dollars.

The funding debate comes despite record defence spending already approved, including an 840 billion dollar allocation under the Fiscal 2026 Defence Appropriations Act.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration has also defended its decision to ease sanctions on Iranian and Russian oil, arguing the move will stabilise global markets and prevent sharp spikes in oil prices. Officials say the strategy could limit excess revenues for both countries while allowing more nations to access energy supplies.
