Gold Coin Featuring Trump Approved, Raises Ethics Concerns

Washington, D.C.: The United States Commission of Fine Arts has approved plans for a commemorative gold coin featuring a portrait of US President Donald Trump, in a move that has sparked legal and ethical debate.

The federal agency, whose members include several Trump appointees, voted unanimously on Thursday to back the proposal. The coin, intended as a commemorative item rather than circulating currency, is expected to feature a bald eagle on one side and a presidential portrait of Trump on the other.

Under US law, living presidents are generally prohibited from appearing on official currency. However, officials argue the commemorative nature of the coin may allow it to bypass these restrictions.

The design is based on a black-and-white photograph taken by Daniel Torok and displayed at the National Portrait Gallery. The image shows Trump leaning forward with both fists on a table.

Officials indicated that the coin could be produced at the maximum size currently minted by the US Mint, approximately 7.6 centimetres in diameter.

The proposal comes alongside separate plans to introduce a $1 coin bearing Trump’s image—an initiative that has drawn criticism from opponents, who describe both efforts as inappropriate for a sitting president.

In recent months, Trump has also sought to place his name on institutions such as the United States Institute of Peace and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, both of which are currently facing legal challenges.

The developments have intensified debate over presidential norms and the limits of executive influence on national symbols.
