US Submarine Torpedo Sinks Iranian Warship Near Sri Lanka, Dozens Killed

An Iranian warship was sunk by a torpedo fired from a United States submarine off the southern coast of Sri Lanka, as tensions between the United States and Iran continue to escalate.

According to reports, at least 87 Iranian sailors were killed when the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena was struck on Wednesday. The vessel was sailing in international waters while returning from a naval exercise organized by India in the Bay of Bengal.

The attack comes amid an intensifying US-Israeli air campaign against Iran, which has now entered its fifth consecutive day. Officials in Washington warned that future strikes may target locations deeper inside Iran. At the same time, US forces have also carried out operations against pro-Iranian militias in Iraq.

Meanwhile, Iran’s elite military force, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), announced it would continue launching missile and drone attacks on targets across the Middle East.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the naval strike, stating that the IRIS Dena was sunk while sailing close to the Sri Lankan coast. The Pentagon also released black-and-white footage showing a Mark 48 heavyweight torpedo hitting the frigate and sending a large column of seawater into the air.

“An American submarine sank an Iranian warship that believed it was safe in international waters,” Hegseth said, noting that the attack took place late Tuesday night.

He added that the incident marked the first time since World War II that an enemy ship has been sunk by a torpedo, describing it as a “quiet death.”

However, the strike has raised concerns among some former US officials, who questioned whether Washington’s objective of targeting Iran’s military leadership could violate international law.
