Pyongyang: North Korea has once again re-appointed Kim Jong Un as the general secretary of its ruling Workers' Party of Korea, the state news agency Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said Monday. The decision was taken on the fourth day of the rare Ninth Party Congress in Pyongyang, which gathers thousands of delegates from across the nation.
State media reported that the election was carried out “in accordance with the unshakable will and unanimous desire” of party members, the military and ordinary citizens, underscoring Kim’s continued dominance in North Korean politics. The congress, held roughly every five years, also saw the selection of a new Central Committee and revisions to party rules, though the details of those changes have not been fully disclosed.
In official speeches, the party praised Kim’s leadership, highlighting what state outlets described as significant achievements in strengthening North Korea’s nuclear forces and defense capabilities under his tenure. Delegates lauded his role in bolstering national deterrence and raising the country’s international profile.
The congress is expected to set broad policy directions for the next five years, including on economic development, defense strategy and diplomatic positioning. The reaffirmation of Kim’s leadership signals a focus on consolidating internal control and prioritising military modernization amid ongoing tensions with the United States and South Korea.
With the congress underway, Pyongyang continues to portray Kim’s leadership as key to achieving both military strength and economic goals, even as sanctions and diplomatic isolation persist. The reaffirmation of his position is likely to shape North Korea’s domestic and foreign policy for years to come
