Trump Raises Global Tariffs to 15% After Court Setback
President Donald Trump on Saturday announced an increase in the global import duty to 15 percent, reinforcing his aggressive tariff strategy just a day after the Supreme Court struck down much of his tariff program.
On his Truth Social platform, Trump criticized Friday’s ruling, calling it an “extraordinarily anti-American decision,” and said the administration was raising tariffs “to the fully allowed, and legally tested, 15% level.”
The Supreme Court had ruled 6-3 that Trump lacked authority to impose tariffs under a 1977 law granting emergency economic powers. Initially, Trump had announced a 10 percent global tariff using a different legal approach.
In an unusual move, Trump also personally attacked the conservative justices in the majority, labeling them “fools and lap dogs” and accusing them of “disloyalty.”
The court’s decision marks a significant setback for Trump’s signature trade policy, which has caused disruptions in global markets and drawn international criticism. Saturday’s announcement is expected to add further uncertainty as Trump continues his trade war approach.
The new 15 percent duty is temporary, lasting 150 days. Certain sectors, including pharmaceuticals, and goods entering under the US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement, remain exempt, according to a White House fact sheet.
