Washington: Senior U.S. officials say the American military is repositioning forces and stepping up planning for a possible multi-week military operation against Iran if ordered by President Donald Trump, signaling heightened readiness amid mounting regional tensions.

Pentagon planners have drawn up scenarios for a sustained campaign that would go beyond last year’s limited strikes, involving broader targets across Iran’s security and regime infrastructure. U.S. Central Command is dispatching additional assets including two aircraft carriers, fighter jets, destroyers and thousands of troops to the United States Department of Defense area of operations in the Middle East.

One of the carriers being redirected is the USS Gerald R. Ford, the largest in the U.S. fleet, which is moving from the Caribbean to join the USS Abraham Lincoln and its strike group already in regional waters a clear indication of expanded military options should diplomacy fail.

The intensified preparations come as U.S. and Iranian representatives recently convened in Oman for indirect talks aimed at defusing the crisis over Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. Despite these efforts, Washington has maintained that all options remain available, with Trump publicly stressing the need to balance pressure with ongoing negotiation efforts.

In remarks to U.S. troops, Trump expressed skepticism about progress in the talks, underscoring that a strong posture is necessary to influence Tehran’s choices including through the threat of force if needed.

While diplomatic channels still operate, the U.S. military’s expanded footprint and planning for extended operations significantly raise the stakes for any future confrontation, foreshadowing a potentially prolonged period of tension in the region.
