A 36-year-old freelance events professional, Avinash Sequeira, is facing a staggering medical debt of nearly Dh400,000 (41,069.35 BHD) following a serious motorcycle accident near Dubai Silicon Oasis. The incident occurred early Sunday morning as Sequeira was returning from a routine group ride to Hatta with fellow members of the Ducati Owners Club. After the group stopped near Liwan to address a radiator leak on one of their bikes, Sequeira swapped motorcycles for the final stretch home. While navigating a gentle curve on a bridge at approximately 50kmph, the borrowed bike unexpectedly lost traction and collapsed onto his legs.
The impact resulted in multiple fractures to both legs and his right hip, necessitating immediate emergency trauma care at Fakeeh University Hospital. Sequeira has already undergone five hours of surgery to install steel rods in his femur and hip, with at least two additional reconstructive procedures scheduled for his left leg and right tibia. His father, Sunil Sequeira, noted that the family was first alerted to the crash by an automated SOS signal from Avinash’s iPhone, but they now face a dire financial crisis as Avinash is currently uninsured.
With a recovery timeline estimated at several months of rehabilitation before he can walk again, the financial burden continues to escalate. Despite the overwhelming costs, the family has expressed deep gratitude for the swift response of emergency services and the outpouring of support from the local biking community. However, without medical insurance to cover the specialised surgeries and long-term care, the Sequeira family remains in a precarious position as they navigate the mounting costs of his hospital stay.
