Trump Shares Controversial Map Depicting Expanded US Territory

Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump posted a series of images on his social media platform Truth Social depicting a modified map of the United States that places Canada, Greenland and other territories within U.S. borders, reigniting controversy over his foreign policy approach. The posts have drawn sharp criticism from world leaders and raised concerns about diplomatic tensions with longtime allies.
One image shows a version of the American flag that stretches across North America, including Canada and Greenland, accompanied by captions like “Greenland US Territory Est 2026.” Another graphic appears to show Trump and senior U.S. officials raising a flag in Greenland under the bold claim that the territory will eventually become part of the United States.
Trump’s posts come amid his heightened rhetoric about acquiring Greenland, which is currently a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. Trump has repeatedly argued that Greenland is strategically crucial to U.S. national security due to its location and proximity to Arctic Sea routes and global rival powers.
The president has also intertwined these claims with threats of economic pressure, including threatening to impose tariffs on European countries unless they agree to cede control of Greenland a stance that has drawn strong pushback from Denmark and other NATO allies.
Leaders in Europe have dismissed the map’s suggestions as unrealistic and a breach of international norms. The Danish government has repeatedly stated that Greenland is not for sale, and the idea of sovereign territory being altered without consent has alarmed both Canadian and EU officials.
Analysts say the imagery and accompanying rhetoric widely shared online reflect a broader shift in Trump’s foreign policy narrative that combines national security arguments with symbolic political messaging. Critics argue that promoting graphic depictions of territorial expansion undermines diplomatic relations and risks misinterpretation both at home and abroad.
The posts also reference Venezuela in some images, suggesting an extended U.S. sphere of influence that includes diverse regions of the Western Hemisphere. The map’s release has sparked debate over the intention behind the imagery whether it is aspirational, rhetorical or part of a broader strategy to influence geopolitical discussions.
European capitals have expressed alarm at the developments and are preparing to coordinate responses that reaffirm the sovereignty of Canada and Greenland, even as discussions continue at high levels of NATO and diplomatic circles
