Major Protests Erupt Across Iran, Dozens Killed

Tehran: Large-scale protests have erupted across Iran, with massive crowds reported in the capital, Tehran, as demonstrations spread nationwide. Activists say a nationwide internet blackout has been imposed, limiting access to information and making it difficult to independently verify developments on the ground.

According to Iranian human rights groups, more than 340 separate protests have taken place across all 31 provinces of the country, highlighting the scale of the unrest. The demonstrations have been reported in major cities as well as smaller towns.

Human rights organisations say that at least 34 protesters and two security personnel have been killed since the protests began. In addition, more than 2,000 people have reportedly been arrested, as security forces moved to disperse demonstrators and restore order.

Reacting to the unrest, US President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to Iran’s leadership, saying Washington would take “very hard” action if Iranian authorities begin killing protesters. In an interview, Trump said he had informed Tehran that if it used lethal force against demonstrators the United States would respond forcefully. Trump also declined to meet with Reza Pahlavi, the exiled son of Iran’s last shah who has called for popular demonstrations, stating that such a meeting “would not be appropriate” at this stage.
