Las Vegas: Hyundai Motor Co., through its robotics subsidiary Boston Dynamics, has unveiled an updated version of its humanoid robot Atlas at the CES technology exhibition in Las Vegas, marking a significant step toward integrating advanced robotics into automobile manufacturing.
The new Atlas model is designed for use in production environments and is expected to be deployed at Hyundai’s automotive plants, including its Savannah facility in the U.S. state of Georgia. According to reports, the company plans a phased rollout of the technology, beginning in 2028 with robots handling repetitive tasks such as sorting and arranging components. By 2030, Atlas robots are expected to take on more complex assembly operations directly on production lines.
Hyundai aims to scale up robot manufacturing to as many as 30,000 units annually at a new U.S.-based facility, underscoring its long-term commitment to automation and artificial intelligence. Chairman Chung Euisun has said the adoption of AI-driven robotics is essential for maintaining competitiveness in the global automotive industry.
The move places Hyundai in direct competition with other automakers investing heavily in humanoid robotics, including Tesla, which is developing its Optimus robot, and China’s Xpeng, which has showcased its Iron model. Toyota has also partnered with industry peers to accelerate AI robotics development.
The updated Atlas robot features human-sized manipulators equipped with tactile sensors and joints offering a full range of motion. It can lift loads of up to 50 kilograms and operate reliably in extreme temperatures ranging from minus 20 degrees Celsius to 40 degrees Celsius, enhancing workplace safety while reducing labour-intensive tasks in factory settings.
