Kim Jong Un says North Korea could “get along” with U.S

Pyongyang: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has indicated that his country could “get along well” with the United States if Washington abandons what he describes as its “hostile policy” toward Pyongyang. The comments were made at the closing session of North Korea’s Ninth Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea, according to state media reports.

Kim said relations with the U.S. depend entirely on America’s attitude, stressing that if Washington respects North Korea’s current constitutional status and drops confrontational policies, there would be no reason for continued antagonism. However, he also warned that Pyongyang will respond in kind if the United States maintains a hostile stance.

The remarks suggest a conditional openness to engagement with the U.S., but Kim tied improved ties to the U.S. acknowledging North Korea’s position as a nuclear-armed state a red line that has stalled past diplomatic efforts. This stance reflects Pyongyang’s insistence on nuclear recognition as a basis for any future talks.

Kim reiterated North Korea’s determination to strengthen its nuclear arsenal and military capabilities, emphasising that the nation is prepared for either peaceful coexistence or “eternal confrontation” depending on U.S. policy.

The comments come amid ongoing speculation that U.S. President Donald Trump could pursue renewed diplomatic contact during his planned April visit to China, which might provide an opportunity for high-level talks should conditions align.
