Djibouti: Djibouti and Egypt signed three major cooperation agreements aimed at expanding collaboration in renewable energy, port infrastructure and logistics, during a high-level visit by H.E. Lieutenant General Engineer Kamel El-Wazir, Egypt’s Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport.
The agreements were signed at the Djibouti International Free Trade Zone (DIFTZ) in the presence of H.E. Hassan Houmed, Djibouti’s Minister of Equipment and Transport, H.E. Ahmed Ali Barreh, Djibouti’s Ambassador to Egypt, and H.E. Abdelrahman Raafat Khattab, Egypt’s Ambassador to Djibouti.
The first agreement was signed between Elsewedy Electric and the Doraleh Container Terminal (SGTD) to develop a 23-megawatt solar power plant with battery storage on a 30-hectare site in Doraleh. The renewable energy project will supply electricity exclusively to the container terminal.
A second agreement, in the form of a Memorandum of Understanding, was concluded between Great Horn Investment Holding (GHIH) and Egypt’s state-owned Holding Company for Maritime and Land Transport (HCMLT) for the development of a new container terminal with a capacity of 5 million TEUs, featuring a 1,450-metre quay and an 18-metre draft.
The third agreement involved the leasing of an initial 10-hectare plot within the Djibouti International Free Trade Zone to establish a logistics zone dedicated to the export and processing of Egyptian products, a project expected to support trade growth and create employment opportunities.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Lt Gen El-Wazir said the agreements reflected the strong fraternal ties between Djibouti and Egypt and underscored a shared commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation in industrial development, transport and logistics.
