Third Senior Russian Officer Killed in Moscow Bombing This Year

The assassination of Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov on Monday morning marks the third high-ranking Russian military officer killed in a targeted bombing within a single year. Sarvarov, the head of the General Staff’s Operational Training Directorate, died after an explosive device detonated beneath his vehicle in Moscow. This follows a pattern of attacks on top leadership, including the December 2024 scooter bombing that killed Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov and an April car bombing that claimed the life of Lt. Gen. Yaroslav Moskalik.
Russia’s Investigative Committee has identified Ukrainian intelligence services as a primary suspect in the Sarvarov case, a suspicion bolstered by Ukraine’s previous admission of responsibility for the attack on Kirillov. Despite high-profile arrests in earlier cases and a public directive from President Vladimir Putin for security agencies to improve their efficiency, these recurring assassinations suggest a persistent vulnerability for senior officials operating in and around the Russian capital.
