Messi’s India Tour Sparks Outrage Over India’s Football Priorities

New Delhi: Lionel Messi’s India tour came with a hefty price tag, though the exact amount he was paid hasn’t been officially disclosed. Indian media estimates his appearance fee at ₹100-150 crore ($12-18 million). The promotional visit included premium meet-and-greet sessions: ₹9.95 lakh (~$12,000) for a photo and handshake, while corporate packages reached ₹1 crore. Tickets for public events ranged from ₹3,800 to ₹11,800.

The ‘GOAT India Tour 2025’ spanned Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi, featuring meet-and-greets, football clinics, penalty showcases, and exclusive VIP interactions. However, the extravagant event drew sharp criticism: fans called it a "scam" due to chaotic logistics in Kolkata, where overcrowding and vandalism marred the experience. Sponsorships reportedly earned ₹120-180 crore, but critics argue the tour lacked meaningful impact on Indian football.

Ticket prices were steep: the ‘GOAT Fan Experience’ (₹9.95 lakh) included a private meet, photo, signed jersey, and meal. The ‘Family Experience’ (₹25 lakh) added an autograph for two attendees. Corporate clients paid ₹95 lakh for a memento and team photo, while a Closed-Door Meet in Delhi cost ₹1 crore.

Some fans called it ‘unproductive’ for Indian football, criticising the lack of on-field action. Others justified the cost, citing Messi’s global stature.

The tour boosted visibility and engaged fans, but raised concerns: exorbitant costs offered no tangible growth for local football. The Indian Super League struggles with dwindling attendance, and Messi’s visit reportedly didn’t address systemic issues.
