UK Recognizes Palestinian Statehood in Push for Two-State Solution

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has formally announced the recognition of the State of Palestine, emphasizing the United Kingdom’s commitment to reviving the hope of peace and a Two-State Solution in the Middle East.

Addressing the escalating violence in the region, Starmer highlighted the urgent need for both a safe and secure Israel alongside a viable Palestinian state, noting that “at the moment, we have neither.” He stressed that ordinary people—Israeli and Palestinian alike—deserve to live in peace, rebuild their lives, and be free from violence and suffering.

The Prime Minister also condemned ongoing atrocities, nearly two years after the attacks of October 7, 2023. “Hostages are still held by the terrorists of Hamas. Recent images show them suffering and emaciated,” he said, urging the immediate release of all hostages. Starmer described Hamas as a “brutal terror organization” and reiterated that the recognition of Palestinian statehood is not a reward for Hamas, which will have no role in government or security.

Starmer also addressed the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, criticizing Israel’s bombardment and the resulting death and devastation. Tens of thousands have been killed, including many seeking basic necessities. The UK has evacuated the first group of sick and injured children to receive treatment in the NHS and continues to increase humanitarian support, but Starmer called for Israel to lift border restrictions and allow aid to reach those in need.

Despite the challenges—including Hamas’ actions, Israel’s escalating conflict, and settlement expansion in the West Bank—Starmer said the UK remains committed to a Two-State Solution. He outlined a framework for peace, which includes reform of the Palestinian Authority and steps leading from a ceasefire in Gaza to meaningful negotiations between the two states.

The recognition of Palestine places the UK alongside over 150 countries that have already acknowledged Palestinian statehood, reaffirming a pledge to both Palestinian and Israeli people that a better future is possible.

The Prime Minister concluded with a call for unity: “We must reject hate, combat it in all its forms, and channel our efforts united in hope—towards the release of hostages, an end to violence and suffering, and a return to a Two-State Solution.”
