Seoul, South Korea – A man stabbed three people to death on Wednesday inside a pizza restaurant in Seoul’s Gwanak district, police confirmed.

According to authorities, the attacker was the owner of the restaurant. He reportedly became involved in a dispute with contractors before carrying out the attack.

Police received an emergency call around 11:00 am (0200 GMT) with the plea: “Help me, I’ve been stabbed.” Officers rushed to the scene, where they found three victims – two men and one woman. All were taken to hospital but later pronounced dead.

The suspect, a man in his forties, attempted to take his own life after the attack but was restrained. Police said he is receiving medical treatment and will be taken into custody once his condition allows.

While South Korea is known for its safety and low crime rates – with a murder rate of just 1.3 per 100,000 people in 2021, far below the global average – the country has seen a rise in stabbing incidents in recent months. In May, a man attacked and injured three police officers in another knife attack.

Police are continuing their investigation into Wednesday’s killings.
