The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has reported that Israeli drones dropped four grenades near its personnel on Tuesday morning, calling it “one of the most serious attacks” since last year’s ceasefire.

According to UNIFIL, peacekeepers were clearing roadblocks near a UN position southeast of the village of Marwahin when the incident occurred. One grenade landed just 20 meters away, while three others fell within 100 meters of the troops and their vehicles.

UNIFIL stressed that the Israeli military had been notified in advance about the clearance operation. The mission said the attack violated UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which underpins the 2006 ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah.

“Any actions that endanger UN peacekeepers or interfere with their work are unacceptable and a serious violation of international law,” UNIFIL said in a statement.

The incident comes shortly after the UN Security Council voted to extend UNIFIL’s mandate until 2027, describing it as a final renewal. Israel, backed by the United States, had pressed for the mission’s end, arguing that Lebanon’s government must take full responsibility for security across its territory.

Israel welcomed the decision, framing it as the conclusion of UNIFIL’s nearly 50-year deployment. The move follows escalating tensions in the region after Israel’s military operations against the Iran-backed Hezbollah group.
