China has just gone through its hottest summer ever, according to the China Meteorological Administration (CMA).
Between June and August, the country saw unusually high temperatures, with the national average reaching 22.31°C, the highest since records began. The CMA made the announcement on Monday night, noting that much of the south was hit by repeated heatwaves.
In some places, the heat was extreme. In June, Beijing’s temperatures climbed close to 40°C, while authorities in July issued warnings about heat-related health risks across large parts of eastern China.
The heat is not unique to China. Meteorological agencies in Japan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom also confirmed record-breaking summer temperatures this year.
The CMA added that while some areas may see a short break from the hot weather midweek, cities like Shanghai are expected to face daily highs above 35°C again before the week ends.
Experts say these rising temperatures are linked to climate change, which is causing heatwaves to become longer, more frequent, and more intense.
China, the world’s largest emitter of carbon dioxide, has pledged to peak its emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. At the same time, it has become a global leader in renewable energy, seeking to reduce its reliance on coal and other polluting fuels.
