The death toll from a powerful earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan has risen to more than 800, officials said Monday, with most casualties reported in the remote Kunar province.
Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told a press conference in Kabul that around 800 people have died and about 2,500 others were injured in Kunar. In neighboring Nangarhar province, the toll remains at 12 dead and 255 injured.
Rescue efforts are ongoing, but the remote location and damaged infrastructure are making it difficult to reach affected communities. Authorities are urging urgent humanitarian support to assist survivors.
