Traffic Halted at Paris Gare du Nord After WWII Bomb Found on Tracks

Train services at Paris's Gare du Nord were brought to a halt on Friday morning after a World War II-era bomb was discovered on tracks leading to the bustling terminal. The unexploded device was found during overnight maintenance work in the suburb of Saint Denis, around 1.5 miles (2.5 km) from the station.

At approximately 4 a.m., workers performing earth-moving tasks near the tracks uncovered the bomb in the Seine-Saint-Denis département. The discovery prompted an immediate response from the national SNCF rail company, which confirmed that the bomb was a relic from the Second World War.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the RER B suburban train line alerted the public to the situation, stating that minesweepers had been swiftly dispatched to the site to secure the area. Due to safety concerns, all train traffic leading to Gare du Nord has been temporarily suspended.

The incident highlights the ongoing risk of unexploded ordnance in certain parts of France, where bombs from the war remain buried underground. Authorities are working to safely neutralize the device and restore train services as soon as possible.

As of now, no injuries have been reported, and the situation remains under control as specialists continue their work at the site. Travelers heading to or from Gare du Nord are advised to check for updates and plan alternate routes.
