Emirates Marks Milestone as 100 Aircraft Complete Major Retrofit Programme
Emirates has reached a major milestone in its US$5 billion fleet modernisation programme, completing the refurbishment of 100 aircraft under what is considered the world's largest airline retrofit initiative.
Since the programme began in November 2022, the Dubai-based carrier has fully upgraded 47 Airbus A380s and 53 Boeing 777s with comprehensive nose-to-tail cabin refurbishments. The airline expects to retrofit around 20 additional aircraft by the end of 2026, taking the programme well beyond its halfway point toward the planned upgrade of 219 aircraft.
The ambitious project has required more than 4.4 million engineering hours over 44 months, with over 400 engineers and technicians carrying out the extensive modifications at Emirates Engineering's facilities in Dubai.
A key feature of every refurbished aircraft is the installation of Emirates' Premium Economy cabin. More than 3,800 Premium Economy seats have been fitted across the upgraded fleet, enabling the airline to expand the award-winning cabin class to more destinations across its global network.
Emirates President Sir Tim Clark described the achievement as a significant milestone, saying the retrofit programme reflects the airline's commitment to delivering a best-in-class travel experience across every cabin. He added that completing such a complex project entirely in-house demonstrated Emirates Engineering's advanced planning, technical expertise and craftsmanship.
Each retrofit involves stripping the aircraft interiors, replacing thousands of components, and rebuilding the cabins with upgraded seating, fixtures and finishes. An Airbus A380 requires more than 4,000 individual parts during the process, while a Boeing 777 uses over 2,500 components. Emirates has also developed specialised equipment and innovative engineering solutions to improve efficiency throughout the programme while working with more than 100 suppliers worldwide.
Originally announced in 2021 as a 105-aircraft refurbishment initiative, the programme was expanded to 191 aircraft in May 2024 before growing to 219 aircraft later that year due to strong customer demand. The first retrofitted Boeing 777 entered commercial service in August 2024, while a redesigned A380 featuring Premium Economy on the upper deck debuted in May 2026.
The next phase of the retrofit programme, scheduled to begin in October 2026, will introduce 4K OLED HDR10+ seatback entertainment screens, lightweight Safran Z400 seats and additional cabin enhancements.
As part of its sustainability efforts, Emirates is also repurposing materials removed during the retrofits. High-quality leather and fabrics are being transformed into limited-edition travel accessories under the "Aircrafted by Emirates" collection, while more than 4,000 backpacks made from recycled Economy Class seat fabric have been donated to children in 11 countries.
