Reddit Challenges Australia's Social Media Ban on Under-16s

Sydney: Reddit has filed a legal challenge against Australia's new social media law, which bans under-16s from popular apps and websites, including Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and X. The US-based discussion forum argues the law is flawed and should exempt it since it's not an age-restricted app.

The law, which came into effect on December 10, imposes fines of up to A$49.5 million (approximately US$33 million) on tech firms that fail to remove Australian-based users under 16. Reddit claims the law infringes on freedom of political communication and raises serious privacy concerns about age verification and data collection.

A Reddit spokesperson pointed out the government's inconsistency in selecting banned platforms, with some apps having large under-16 user groups exempt, such as Roblox, Pinterest and WhatsApp. Reddit is an adult-focused discussion forum, not driven by algorithms and social engagement, and has serious concerns about verifying users' ages and collecting personal data.

The Australian government defends the ban, saying it's protecting kids from harm. "We will stand firm to protect young Australians from experiencing harm on social media," a government spokesperson said.

Reddit's case is separate from one filed by an internet rights group, seeking to overturn the laws on freedom of speech grounds. Australia's social media ban is being closely watched, with countries like New Zealand and Malaysia considering similar rules. The government acknowledges the policy will be imperfect, but argues it's necessary to safeguard children from "predatory algorithms" and online harm.
