East Riffa took down defending champions Hidd 3-1 last night to narrow the gap at the top of the table in the 2020/2021 Nasser bin Hamad Bahrain Premier Football League.

East Riffa’s victory helped them leapfrog Manama to second place on the standings after Manama lost 0-2 to Al Ahli in yesterday’s other match.

In East Riffa’s victory, an own goal from Abdulla Duij and strikes from Lukasz Szymon Gkiewicz and Mohammed Al Rumaihi helped them come away with the result. Duij’s own goal came in the fifth minute off a cross into the box from East Riffa’s Yuri Jesus Messias. They then doubled their advantage just eight minutes later after Gkiewicz found the net from close range.

Hidd were able to immediately get a goal back off a Duij header just two minutes on.

That helped them head into the half with a single-goal deficit.

In the second half, Al Rumaihi made it 3-1 for East Riffa in the 64th minute with a brilliant counter-attacking goal. The result earned East Riffa their ninth win in 14 matches as they improved to 28 points.

They are now just nine points behind table-toppers Riffa.

Hidd suffered their sixth loss and stayed on 18 points in fifth place.

Meanwhile, in Ahli’s win over Manama, on target for the winners were Faisal Hasan Habib and Hamza Al Senhaji.

Ahli registered their fourth win in 14 games and they improved to 17 points.

Manama suffered their fourth loss and dropped to third on the standings and stayed with 26 points.
