Paris Saint-Germain became the first French side to win the UEFA Super Cup after a dramatic fightback against Tottenham Hotspur in Udine, winning 4-3 on penalties.
Thomas Frank’s Spurs, Europa League winners last season, were moments from victory after Micky van de Ven’s rebound finish and Cristian Romero’s header put them 2-0 ahead. But the European champions, still shaking off early-season rust, found a way back. Substitute Lee Kang-in struck crisply on 85 minutes, and in the fourth minute of stoppage time Gonçalo Ramos launched himself at Ousmane Dembélé’s cross to level the contest.
In the shootout, Van de Ven and Mathys Tel missed for Spurs, leaving Nuno Mendes to coolly dispatch the decisive spot-kick. PSG’s players swarmed the pitch, captain Marquinhos hoisting the trophy in front of the travelling fans.
“It’s incredible to win like this,” Marquinhos said. “We’re not at our best physically, but the team showed character. The subs made the difference, and in the shootout we had the right players and a great goalkeeper.”
For Luis Enrique’s side, it was another highlight in a year already defined by their maiden Champions League success in May. Spurs, meanwhile, were left to reflect on what might have been after holding a two-goal lead until the 85th minute.
